Thursday Things #98
Hello yes, what we have here is a gathering of good words, a show about wine, a long-time favorite, sweaters for fake fall, and flowers. Always flowers.
Every other Thursday, I share a handful of things I'm loving, reading, watching, listening to or just discovered. AKA the random good stuff we’d talk about over coffee or text, if we had one another’s phone number. I'm glad you're here!
Happy Thursday! I’m headed to meet a friend for a walk and (book) talk along the trail in, oh, approximately five minutes so we’re jumping straight into the Good Things below.
(We’re both reading a book on the very light, super breezy topic of biblical womanhood.)
(Get you a friend who will chat about fluffy fiction one day and theology the next, amen.)
(Hi Mel, see you in twenty minutes. 👋)
Okay, onward. As always, I’d love to hear what you’re reading or what lands on your Good Things list this week. Tap below or on the button at the very bottom to share in the comments.
More of this, please.
This is me, slowly but surely recommending art and flower accounts again and again. Can’t stop won’t stop, honestly, because JUST LOOK.
I guess I’m just going to keep saying it every other month—Yes please to beauty and delight in the feed. The algorithm will keep pushing ads and sponsored posts, and you know I believe strongly in the weight of words, the power of story . . . but beauty like this . . . it feels to me more like hush than hurry, an invitation to slow the scroll and simply appreciate.
And so I shall. With delight. 😉
Really though, I seem to follow a new ‘flower account’ almost every week (two more since Thursday Things #97). I’ll share one now and save one for later. These images? They’re from @jannelford and I am A FAN.
Drops of God on Apple TV.
I heard about this show via a recent episode of The Popcast. (If you’re familiar with their podcast, this isn’t a green light—though I think it will be soon—but came up as a show Annie F. Downs recently mentioned to Jamie.) Never have I ever watched a show about wine . . . but I suppose that’s the thing, really. The story beneath the story is one of learning, loyalty, and family.
I won’t say much more than that because there are twists and turns, but I’ll tell you this: They stuck the landing and I’ll be thinking about the understory for a long time.
There are 8 episodes and it’s currently 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
P.s. You’re going to want subtitles—it’s not one where you can click play and listen in the background while doing something else.
The lightweight sweatshirt I will be wearing on repeat.
First of all, there’s this.
Tell me, where’s the lie?
(Also I cannot with “spring of deception” and “the pollening.”)
We’ll be sitting on the front porch for another month or so, but I am READY for False Fall. These lightweight sweatshirts (they’re $12.98) from Walmart will be my go-to, the perfect in-between until Actual Fall arrives in all its much-anticipated glory.
The color options are limited online, but you might swing by your local Walmart to see . . . mine had a bunch that aren’t listed on the website. (But—if you search “time and tru” sweater, there are several similar items with slightly different styles/necklines. So you may prefer the online options!)
Anyway. I bought one in person and two online thanks to this 2 for $10 sale. It’s only available for those two particular colors, but if you like them both (I do!) it’s a win-win.
I’ll meet you there.
I cannot overstate how many times I played this song when it released a decade ago. It became one of my go-tos for when insomnia reared its ugly head—or when sleep arrived but brought with it night terrors.
It’s been a while since I heard the tune, but the words are deeply ingrained in me—to the point that I found myself randomly humming the melody and then singing “and when it does, I’ll meet you there” while getting ready one morning this week. And so I figure it’s high time I share this long-time favorite here. 🎵
Two saves of good words.
Circling back around to Instagram followers . . . but this time, two posts I saved in the last two weeks because man oh man, the words. I’ve linked to Kate and Andrea before, so you may already follow/be familiar with these captions if they landed in your social media feed too. But if not, the posts (linked below) are (very much) worth a couple minutes of your time.
A poetic prayer by
. Here now, there when. Yes and amen. One of my favorite verses, lettered by Andrea Howey, but oof it’s the caption. I feel like I’ve become a clanging gong of “hope hope hope, she’s still talking about hope and sharing words about hope and everything is coming back around to hope” all 2022/2023 long. But also: These have been the two hardest years I’ve walked through and hope is a fight, an anchor, a seed, an ampersand, a door, an altar in the ruins, a lighthouse, a thousand metaphors and a sure promise. And so: Hopeward. May we camp out in the land of hope.
Your turn: What are your recent good things? Accounts you’re loving, shows you’re watching, fun finds, words you saved, songs you can’t quit, etc.
P.s. If you’re a paid subscriber, our next book is officially confirmed. 🎉 (Maybe I clapped my hands over the “YES!”, maybe I didn’t, who can say.) Consider this a quick heads up to keep an eye on your inbox and our private IG account (there’s a giveaway coming) next week!
I will be happily watching for our next book.
I just attended a virtual meeting with Baker Books featuring Max Lucado and Lee Warren. It was really a book launch but they talked about so much more than Lee's new book. They talked about hope and how of hope and power of hope and source of hope. They recorded it so I hope to share the link on social media. We have no reason without hope. That's my most recent good thing.
